Mt. Kanchenjunga (8586m) is the third highest mountain of the world, situated in the eastern northern part of Nepal, bordering Indian Sikkim. The Kanchenjunga Trekking Route was opened in 1988, and is an adventurous trek that takes you to the remote areas of the eastern Himalayan region of Nepal, and offers pristine nature, unspoiled culture, as well as a classic Himalayan vista of towering mountains. On this trek you will enjoy the tantalizing views of the four of the five world highest mountains, Everest, Makalu, Lhotse and Kanchenjunga. The wide range of scenery, with terraced hills with wheat and potato cultivation, lush tropical forest with chestnut and oak, Rhododendron flower leading to the alpine zone, provides you peace and inspiration throughout the trek. The trek also offers an experience of the unique and rich culture of the ethnic Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa communities, almost untouched by the modern world. The diverse and fascinating landscape passes through a conservation area of a wide variety of flora and fauna, river valleys, waterfalls and high passes.
Trek to Kanchenjunga begins with the flight from Kathmandu to Sukhetar airstrip. Kanchenjunga Base Camp can be approached from Indian side, but from the Nepal side provides you the full experience of the Kanchenjunga region. From Sukhetar you walk up through the GhunsaKhola valley through the Rhododendron forest, to the Himalayan region. As you reach higher altitude, the scenery is dominated by a long range of the mountain vistas. In Kanchenjunga range, you can see four high mountains above 8000m, along with Mt. Kanchenjunga at 8586m. On this trek you cross the two high passes, theLapsang La pass, andthe Sinion pass. The Kanchenjunga is a long and adventurous trek that does require prior experience of trekking, and a good physical condition. The best seasons to visit for the Kanchenjunga trek are autumn and spring when the weather is clear and you can enjoy clear views of the mountains and the natural scenery.
