About Lower Dolpo Trek

Lower Dolpo Trek is an outstanding trek that offers the pristine culture of rustic life, the wilderness of nature as well as the panorama of the snow-clad mountains and Phoksundo Lake. Lower Dolpo trek was opened for the trekking purpose in 1992 in combination with beautiful land escape and Tibetan culture. This trek is a more challenging trek than other Trekking routes which are located in the Northern-Western part of Nepal. for organized group trekking and trekkers require a special permit from the government of Nepal. In this trek, you get insight into the Thinley culture nearby Tibet that has survived its originality for centuries. Eric Valli in his Oscar-nominated film Caravan has shown the Dolpo region of Nepal in all its integrity and full mystical experience. The main focal point of this trek is Shey Phoksundo National Park, the biggest national park of Nepal where you can explore various types of flora and fauna, wild animals, and birds as well as the medicinal herbs including Yarsagomba. Shey Phoksundo Lake which is the deepest lake of Nepal, mountain vistas, Buddhist monasteries, and the culture of the Himalayan people is another attraction of the Lower Dolpo trek.

Lower Dolpo begins from the Juphal after the scenic flight from Kathmandu via Nepalgunj. In this trek you pass through the dense forest subtropical forest, Shey Phoksundo National Park, River valleys, the forest of rhododendron, numerous villages, Monasteries, etc. you also visit the Shey Phoksundo Lake with beautiful turquoise blue water which contains no aquatic life. While traveling through the Shey Phoksundo National Park you can see various types of flora and fauna as well as encounter rare wild animals like spotted leopard, blue sheep, Himalayan wolf, the Himalayan black deer, etc and hear the chirping sound of the Birds. In this trek, you also cross the high passes of Baga La and Numa La both above 5000m. You visit the highest village in the world Tarap village at the altitude of 4040 m. In this village, you see the practice of polyandry and pre-Buddhist religion called “Bon Po”. The best season to go for Lower Dolpo Trek is autumn and spring when the weather is clear and you can have a clear view of the mountains as well as the natural scenery.

Day 01 : Arrival day in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)

On this particular day you will land on Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu where you will be warmly received by the representative staffs from Beyond the Limit Treks and Expedition. From TIA, you will be transferred into the hotel in a comfortable vehicle. These tiny things show how much we care for you. Arriving in the hotel we will be discussed on the detail itinerary. This is an important day where you get to sightseeing Kathmandu in the proper guidance of our guide. Since you have lots of things to sight we will be heading in an early morning. There used to an artistic and valuable Durbar Square, at present those monuments are in critical state though it is equally valued. In Kathmandu you can observe numerous cultural heritage sites which are listed in UNESCO, counting Swyambhunath, Bouddhanath and Pashupatinath. Stay overnight in hotel.

Taking breakfast you will drive to TIA and from there you will take an hour of fight to Nepalgunj which is located in the western part of Nepal. It is known as the entry way to Simikot, Humla. From the airport you will transfer to hotel and you can set out to view mini-zoo and local market. Stay overnight in hotel
From the hotel you will again drive to the airport and this time you will catch the flight to Jhupal (Dolpo), situated at 2,320 meter. Meeting the trekking staffs your journey for thrilling trek set into motion. Walking through Bheri River, narrow gorge you will arrive at Dunai which is known as the administrative headquarter of Dolpo Region. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Continuing the trek to southern bank of Bheri will make you walk to wonderful gorge with pine trees. Then, the trail will welcome you with their multicolored terraced field of Tarakot. It is the small village that is standing on the hillock. Stay overnight in tented camp.
From Tarakot you will walk along the Tarap Chu River and you will pass it twice prior you turn up at Sandul Gompa. You will prolong the walk towards the rural villages and farm terraces. Taking an upward hill and then downward will take you to Laini. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Ascending on the vertical trail will take you beyond the Tarap River. The stroll is fairly exciting. You will go through numerous energetic ascends and descends and that will take you to the bank of Chyugur Khola which will unlock to Nawarpani. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Soar up to Kamattarka will make you meet Tarap Chu and Lang Khola. Passing thin gorge, wild rose, bushes, and Himalayan valleys will again make you walk for several hours and then finally you will turn up at Dho Tarap. It is inhabited by some Tibetans and among them majority belong to Magar. Stay overnight in tented cam
This is counted as the rest day for acclimatization where you will take short walk exploring the tradition and culture of people. This is the day for preparation for upcoming day so you will formulate for that trek. Stay overnight in tented camp
Enjoying the lush grasslands you will trek to the Upper Tarap and will stroll to Tarap Chu River. You can sight an amazing vistas of Tarap. Walking to Tokyu village viewing Buddhist monastery belong to Chiba Sect will show the trail to Numa La Base Camp. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Today you will move to the hardest and extensive trek after taking breakfast. Starting from Numa La Pass on the vertical trail will make you reach at the edge. From the edge you can capture the amazing scene of barren mountains of Dolpo. Crossing Numa La you will again move downward to Pelung where you will set the camp. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Starting the trek with a vertical rise to the pinnacle of Baga La Pass will make you sight fantastic landscapes of snow enclosed mountains such as Mount Kanjirowa. You can take some snaps of that charming scene and then you will move downhill to Dajok Tang. Stya overnight in tented camp.
On the following day you will set out to trek Ringmo and you will trek through an attractive pine forest and alpine. Trekking for short duration will make you reach at Ringmo illage which is acknowledged as the traditional Tibetan village of Dolpo. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Today you will set into motion to explore Phoksundo Lake where you will observe Yak caravan and you might have seen such scenes in the movie. You will also trek to the monastery and upon your arrival at Phoksundo Lake you will have delightful landscape of shore. Stay overnight in tented camp
Trekking downward to Chepka and then again towards the enormous rock is the target of this trek. While you trek to Shyanta you will come across several medicinal minerals which can cure nearly all diseases. Then, following the villages it will take you to Shyanta. Stay overnight in tented camp.
On the following day you will tramp to Jhupal via Sulighat which is enclosed by birch trees. Here, the trail will make you sight amazing mountains. Jhupal will allow you to explore the busy market and town. Stay overnight in lodge.
This is considered as the final day where you will drive to airport and from the airport you will catch the flight to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj. Landing at TIA, Kathmandu will set you free from the trip and now you can move towards your onward destination. We are glad to be part of your adventure.
